detect a new external hardrive

I am wondering how I would get robotask to detect an external harddrive when I plug it it. or a thumbdrive or anything USB, Firewire for that matter. what are some simple tools to use that will detect that a new device has been attached?

May I take this one a step further?
How about if that device is a specific camera ('when camera is connected via USB cable, start processing files...') especially when that camera appears in 'my computer' but as a camera device rather than getting an assigned drive letter?
Can I trigger whenever ANY camera is attached to my computer (as opposed to any other type of volume device)?
