Email settings

I am new to this, so please pardon the ignorance.

In the settings for 'Send Email' I have the following:

Host:
smtp.gmail.com
Port:
587 (also have tried 465)
Use SSL - True
Authentication - True

User name and password are also valid.

I am getting an error of:
Error occured: Socket Error # 10060<CR><LF>Connection
timed out.

What am I doing wrong. I also have fiddled around with
connecting to my exchange server with the same result.

I've just tried to send the message via smtp.gmail.com with SSL (port 465).
It’s working. Probably there is some network problem.
